VeryDarkMan Freed After EFCC Arrest Sparks Nationwide Outcry

Social media activist and outspoken critic Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, has been released from custody after spending several days detained by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
VeryDarkMan was arrested on Friday, May 2, under murky circumstances outside a commercial bank in Abuja. His sudden detention quickly sparked outrage online and on the streets, with many young Nigerians taking to social media and organizing protests to demand his release.
The EFCC initially remained silent about the incident, but eventually acknowledged on Tuesday that he was in their custody. According to their official statement, the arrest followed multiple petitions accusing him of serious financial misconduct—allegations the agency said it could not overlook.
Critics of the arrest, including popular human rights campaigner Omoyele Sowore, slammed the EFCC’s handling of the situation and described the arrest as politically motivated. The lack of transparency around the case only fueled public skepticism and intensified calls for justice.
By Tuesday evening, the EFCC announced that VeryDarkMan had been granted administrative bail and would be released once he met the conditions. Later that evening, he walked free and reunited with his legal counsel, Deji Adeyanju.
Although he's now out of custody, the case is far from over. The EFCC has indicated that formal charges may still be brought against him, pending further investigations.
