Akwa Ibom Gov to Appointees: Join Me in APC or Step Down

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has issued a bold ultimatum to his commissioners and political aides: defect with him to the All Progressives Congress (APC) or resign immediately.

Speaking during a State Executive Council meeting, Governor Eno made it clear that his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was final—and well-known. “If anyone still thinks I’m staying in PDP, that person is stuck in the 18th century,” he declared.

The governor explained that his decision was driven by admiration for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership style. He described Tinubu as a leader he wants to align with politically. Eno warned his appointees not to expect negotiations or personal considerations. “If you're not an elected official like a lawmaker or council chairman, then it's simple—follow me or leave,” he said.

He also addressed those within PDP who might think they can oppose him after his defection. “If anyone thinks they’ll use PDP to fight me after I leave, they’re joking—I’ll still hold the reins,” he emphasized, making it clear he intends to maintain control over the party's structure in the state.

Governor Eno also reacted to a report by The Mail newspaper, which revealed he receives N200 million monthly. While he confirmed the amount, he expressed discomfort with the publication, suggesting it could provoke interest from neighboring states like Cross River.

He recalled that Cross River had previously considered asking the Supreme Court to reopen the case over numerous oil wells ceded to Akwa Ibom, and feared that such financial disclosures could reignite those tensions.

As of the time this report was compiled, the State Executive Council meeting was still ongoing, with more decisions expected to unfold.
