US State Declares June 14 as 'Igbo Day' to Celebrate Community's Contributions

In a proud moment for North Carolina, Governor Josh Stein announced that June 14, 2025, will be officially recognized as "Igbo Day" in honor of the contributions and achievements of the Igbo community in the state. This proclamation highlights the significant role that the Igbos, a South-East Nigerian ethnic group, have played in shaping North Carolina’s culture, economy, and public life.
The announcement was made public on June 12, 2025, with the Governor praising the community's remarkable success across various fields including education, law, medicine, entrepreneurship, and technology. The Igbos have called North Carolina home for more than 50 years, and in that time, they’ve made lasting impacts not only in the workforce but in local government and civic service as well.
Governor Stein emphasized that the Igbo community is known for its strong work ethic, dedication, and collective effort to uplift both their own and the wider North Carolina population. “Through their continued efforts,” Stein said, “they aim to inspire future generations to embrace their cultural heritage while fostering a strong sense of purpose and belonging.”
The Igbo community has actively engaged in local charitable causes, volunteering in schools, supporting women’s shelters, and organizing food drives, among other initiatives. Their involvement extends to environmental efforts, such as adopting a highway to keep it clean, as well as participating in cultural performances that showcase Igbo traditions.
In addition to the governor’s proclamation, the Igbo Day Festival Organisation, a non-profit dedicated to uniting the community and promoting Igbo culture, was also recognized. Established in 2022, the organization has already hosted its inaugural festival, drawing attention to Igbo music, art, and traditions.
This isn’t the first time that a U.S. state has chosen to celebrate the contributions of a Nigerian ethnic group. Minnesota proclaimed an ‘Igbo Day’ in August 2022, and other states like New York and Texas have similarly honored the Yoruba community with special days to celebrate their heritage.
Governor Stein concluded his statement by encouraging all North Carolinians to take part in celebrating the Igbo community’s lasting legacy.
