Trump Reveals TikTok US Sale Buyer, Details Coming Soon

US President Donald Trump has announced that a buyer for TikTok’s US operations has been found, though he’s keeping the details under wraps for now. Speaking on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, Trump said the app’s US ownership will transfer to “a group of very wealthy people.” He expects the deal to get approval from China, likely from President Xi Jinping himself.
Trump also hinted at extending the deadline for TikTok’s US ban once again. This extension would give the company an extra 90 days past June 19 to finalize the sale of its American business.
Before Trump’s recent tariffs in April complicated negotiations, sources like Bloomberg reported that the sale was close to happening. The potential buyers were a group of major US investors, including Oracle, Blackstone, and Andreessen Horowitz. But rising tensions between the US and China over trade slowed progress after the tariffs came into play.
This sale isn’t happening in a vacuum. Last year, Congress passed bipartisan legislation demanding that TikTok’s US arm either be sold to American owners or banned outright, due to worries about national security linked to its Chinese parent company ByteDance. TikTok was briefly banned in the US before Trump’s presidency, but he quickly extended its operation once in office.
Interestingly, Trump’s stance on TikTok has shifted over time. While he initially pushed for banning the app during his first term, he later softened his approach. He even admitted in an NBC interview that he has “a little warm spot” for TikTok, acknowledging the platform’s role in helping him connect with younger voters during the last election.
The sale saga of TikTok’s US operations reflects ongoing US-China tensions and growing scrutiny of tech companies tied to China. For now, everyone is waiting for those promised details on the buyer — expected to emerge in about two weeks.
