How a Gambian Developer is Changing Nigeria’s Housing Landscape

Mustapha Njie, a visionary real estate developer from The Gambia, is making waves in Nigeria with a project that could redefine affordable housing in Africa. His company, TAF Africa Global, is behind what is being hailed as the largest affordable housing development in sub-Saharan Africa—a massive 20,000-home city currently rising in Port Harcourt, the capital of oil-rich Rivers State.

This isn’t Njie’s first foray into Nigerian real estate. Over five years ago, TAF completed a successful estate on a sprawling 40-hectare plot in the same city. Now, he's thinking even bigger with what he calls Greater TAF City—a fully planned urban center designed to offer more than just homes. The project includes fully built infrastructure: paved roads, modern drainage, water systems, and electricity—all within the first year of development.

At the 2024 Africa Housing Awards held in Abuja, Nigeria, TAF Africa Global was named Affordable Housing Company of the Year, recognizing its commitment to sustainable and accessible housing solutions. The award underscores the company’s growing influence as a leader in tackling one of the continent’s toughest challenges—affordable housing.

Africa faces an immense housing crisis. A staggering 58 million homes are needed across the continent, and nearly 90% of that demand is for affordable units. This shortage has fueled the rise of informal settlements and overcrowded slums in urban areas.

Njie, who has been in the real estate business for over three decades, understands these challenges deeply. Since founding TAF in The Gambia 32 years ago, he has made it his mission to address Africa’s housing deficit. His goal: build one million homes across sub-Saharan Africa.

With Greater TAF City and other projects across the continent, Njie is proving that private developers can play a major role in shaping Africa’s urban future—offering quality homes that real people can afford, while building cities that stand the test of time.
