Bill Gates to Donate Nearly All His Wealth by 2045

Bill Gates is preparing to give away nearly all of his vast fortune—estimated at around $200 billion—over the next two decades. His plan? To supercharge the work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which he says will close its doors for good on December 31, 2045, once it has met its goals.

Gates is shifting his philanthropic efforts into high gear, committing to spend more on global health, poverty, and equity issues. The foundation’s annual spending is set to rise sharply from \$6 billion to \$9 billion by 2026.

“There are too many urgent problems to solve for me to keep so much wealth,” Gates said. “When I die, I don’t want to be remembered as someone who died rich.”

Since its founding in 2000, the Gates Foundation has spent more than \$100 billion on public health and development, helping reduce childhood mortality and funding life-saving medical innovations around the world.

Gates also took aim at recent cuts to global aid, blaming figures like Elon Musk for weakening support systems that benefit the world’s poorest populations. In particular, he criticized massive reductions in the budget of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), warning that such decisions endanger millions of lives.

As traditional aid sources dry up, Gates is doubling down on philanthropy—with a clear message: wealth should be used to solve problems, not just accumulate.
