UMG Fights Back Against Lawsuit Tying It to Diddy’s Legal Drama

Universal Music Group (UMG) is taking a strong stand in court, pushing to remove itself from a high-profile lawsuit involving music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. The company argues that it has been unfairly dragged into legal battles that have nothing to do with its role in the music industry.

The case was initially filed by Sara Rivers, a former member of the reality TV group Making the Band. Rivers claims that during her time working with Diddy, she experienced abusive and hostile behavior, accusing him and his associates of mistreatment. Her lawsuit names a variety of defendants, including Diddy’s companies, his network of associates, and—controversially—UMG.

In its defense, Universal argues that it has no connection to the allegations and should not be part of this case. The company’s legal team recently filed court documents, pushing for the dismissal of all claims against them. They argue that the lawsuit is flawed, pointing out that some claims are outdated or do not hold up under New York law. UMG also claims that the lawsuit groups a wide range of defendants without offering any solid evidence of wrongdoing against the company itself.

Despite being mentioned in over 1,000 paragraphs of the lawsuit, UMG says it is only referenced in a handful of sentences, none of which provide a clear link to the accusations against Diddy. The company argues that these mentions are vague and do not establish any real grounds for liability.

In their court filing, UMG describes the inclusion in the lawsuit as unnecessary and an attempt to swell the list of defendants in a case that is already attracting significant attention. The court has yet to rule on Universal's request to dismiss the claims, so the legal battle is far from over.
