Kemi Adetiba Unveils Dark Cybercrime Thriller To Kill a Monkey

Kemi Adetiba is back—but this time, she’s flipping the script entirely. The celebrated filmmaker, known for hits like King of Boys and The Wedding Party, is stepping away from familiar territory with her latest Netflix series, To Kill a Monkey. The eight-episode crime thriller premieres on July 18 and marks a bold departure in both theme and tone.

This isn’t just another Nigerian drama. To Kill a Monkey plunges into the gritty underworld of cybercrime, blending psychological suspense with supernatural overtones. It’s Adetiba’s most daring project yet—and her first without longtime muse, Sola Sobowale.

The story follows Efemini, played by William Benson (Crime and Justice Lagos), a man drowning in desperation. When he reconnects with an enigmatic old friend—played by Bucci Franklin (Rattlesnake, Far From Home)—he’s lured into a world of fast money, digital heists, and moral ambiguity. What starts as a lifeline quickly morphs into a spiral of betrayal and blurred loyalties.

Adetiba wears multiple hats on the production, serving as creator, writer, director, and showrunner through her production company, Kemi Adetiba Visuals. She describes the show as a new kind of power struggle: “It’s about power, yes—but now we're exploring it through temptation, survival, and fractured friendships.”

From its first trailer, To Kill a Monkey announces itself as something fresh. It’s visually intense, alternating between grim cityscapes and lavish high-rise apartments, while weaving in a touch of the supernatural. The style echoes iconic Nollywood thrillers like Living in Bondage and Billionaire’s Club, but with a slick, modern edge.

Backing the leads is a powerhouse ensemble including Stella Damasus, Bimbo Akintola, Chidi Mokeme, Ireti Doyle, Lilian Afegbai, Teniola Aladese, Michael Ejoor, and Sunshine Roseman. The project was co-produced by Remi Adetiba and quietly entered production in late 2023, wrapping up by October.

With To Kill a Monkey, Adetiba is not just telling a new story—she’s reinventing the genre. Fans of intense Nigerian crime dramas will find plenty to sink their teeth into.
