Court Clears IPOB leader of Terrorism Charges

The Federal High Court 1 in Owerri, Imo State, has ruled in favor of Chika Edoziem, the Head of the Directorate of State of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The court, presided over by Hon. Justice I.N. Oweibo, dismissed charges against Edoziem related to terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, and violent crimes.

In Suit No: FHC/OW/FHR/29/2024, filed by Edoziem against the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff, the court declared his designation as a wanted person illegal. It also ruled that the publication of his name and photograph in the Ministry of Defence’s First Edition of 2024, labeling him a security threat, violated his constitutional rights.

The judgment directed the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff to retract the declaration and issue a public apology in two national newspapers. Additionally, the court awarded Edoziem ₦5 million in damages for the violation of his fundamental rights.

Among the names published in the security notice, Edoziem was the only one who legally challenged the listing and succeeded. He is second in command to IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently in detention.

Reacting to the ruling, IPOB’s lead counsel, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, praised the decision as a landmark victory against unjust profiling. He emphasized the importance of proper security procedures and due process.

Ejiofor expressed gratitude to his legal team and IPOB supporters, acknowledging their role in the legal battle. He also thanked God, stating that justice had been served.
